Leaving my public, professional life wasn’t as much about getting to fully embrace motherhood as it was the decision to take on motherhood while not completely losing myself. Mothering gave me the courage to invest in the things I was most passionate about and had the skills to do. On the other side of giving birth, long & lonely nights, physical exhaustion and mental challenges the new version of myself was just tough enough to overcome the unexpected hardships I’d face in my life and work. In the contemplative spaces of motherhood, nursing babies and folding laundry and cooking meals, I’d receive visions of the hidden work that needed doing and I committed to making sure it got done. #farmwifeparadox

This is a portrait of Michelle Howell, a hardworking farmwife, mother of five, author, and advocate. On the left side of the bust you can read text from the poem “Anyway” that was on a wall of Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta, India. “If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.” “The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.” Leslie Nichols, Artist Farmer |
