’ve been thinking a lot about my dad today. He’d say that he never believed I’d take my first breath and he called me near as he took his last. He taught me how strong I could be, and gave me the space to find a new way. I learned the generational power of forgiveness through his life and that the moment of death is just as beautiful as birth. In both life and death, we learn to let go and gain something new. I preached his funeral (setting down everything I believed about religion and ritual) in the very place where I’d baptize his granddaughter soon after. Father’s Day will always carry significant meaning in my life because of him. #birthdoula #deathdoula

This is a portrait of Michelle Howell, a hardworking farmwife, mother of five, author, and advocate. On the left side of the bust you can read text from the poem “Anyway” that was on a wall of Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta, India. “If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.” “The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.” Leslie Nichols, Artist Farmer |
