This post is for all the working mamas and dads out there. The summer months on the farm, with their hot work and abundance of harvests, carry a heaviness for us. Nathan knows that the more summer crops we can sell the better we can provide for the needs of our family. This time also carries significance importance for me as I focus on food insecurity through grant writing for @cfmbgky , summer feeding programs, food equity and collaboration with local agencies and non-profits. The baby spends a lot of time with Granny and tonight, he held back tears and said, “I miss you while you help people, mama.” The older kids have learned to hang tight and ride out these waves of sharing our privilege with others. My hope is that all of this really is helping others while also raising really good humans who instinctively see the basic needs of those in our community. A lot of people live out moments of sacrifice like this every day in hopes that what’s blessed them will bless others.

This is a portrait of Michelle Howell, a hardworking farmwife, mother of five, author, and advocate. On the left side of the bust you can read text from the poem “Anyway” that was on a wall of Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta, India. “If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.” “The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.”
    Leslie Nichols, Artist
